TRAINING AND REHABILITATION ACTIVITIES
Shanthiniketan, a
Residential Institution for mentally handicapped has
organised a total of two training programmes for
the benefit of parents of children with mental retardation
with multiple disability and another for parents of
children with mental retardation with sensory impairments.
The training and rehabilitation activities at Shanthiniketan
came into being during the year 1990. This is mainly
due to the continuous and untiring interest shown by
our Management to recruit professional staff to
meet the present day challenges in the field of the
development of mentally handicapped children and also
to elevate the status of our organisation.
(i) Multiple Disability
with Mental Retardation.
Some of the children having mental retardation will also be having some additional problems like hearing impairment, and physical impairment, visual impairment. Special attention is given to such children by a team of multidisciplinary team of professionals who extend their services when asked for. These orthopedic services are available at our institution on every Thursday of the week.
(ii) Mental Retardation and Sensory Impairments
Children with mental retardation along with impairments
in vision/hearing usually require some special education
in addition to the group training. As these senses (sense
of touch, smell etc.,) are impaired to eradicate them
usually require some adaptations. Keeping this aspect
in view, some exclusive services for such children have
been started at our institute. Children
get one-to-one attention from those special and
trained teachers in addition to the classroom experience
and intensive training. Some environmental modifications
have to be affected to meet their specific needs.
